Volunteer in Morocco

We invite enthusiastic volunteers to join us on our community programmes with GMH in Taroudannt, Southern Morocco, situated in the foothills of the mighty Atlas Mountains. The volunteers we look for must have a real commitment to the aims of our work: socio-economic development, building ties of friendship across countries, and increasing cultural understanding.

We normally prefer our volunteers to have a good grasp of French or Arabic to facilitate their work in the community. However, we also offer tuition in support of volunteers who wish to build their language skills before they participate in the projects. Where there is a will, there is a way! If you are unsure whether you qualify, please contact us.

Projects

Volunteers can choose to work in one or two of the institutions or projects outlined below. As far as possible, they have a choice in where they work and in the roles they carry out, and this choice can be made after having visited the projects during the 2 week induction. In this way, work programmes suit each individual volunteer’s strengths and interests as much as possible.

The Lalla Amina Orphanage

The Orphanage is home to many children who have lost their parents or been abandoned. Many children are adopted from the orphanage, but many are resident for a long time and need to find a way to make the institution their home. As a volunteer, your time and energy can help improve the standard of living of these children. Activities include:

  • Caring for, washing, feeding and playing with the twenty or so babies the orphanage caters for at any one time. Many of these children lack the one-on-one interaction necessary for healthy development.
  • Helping the disabled children, bringing fun into their lives
  • Organising activities or extra lessons for school-age orphans

GMH Activities

Our in-country partners run a range of activities every weekend for the young people of Taroudannt and welcome support from our volunteers. These activities are a wonderful way for volunteers to immerse themselves in the local community.

As a volunteer you could be helping with or running group activities with children from 3 – 16 years, anything from dance sessions to touch rugby, from cooking to singing!

Summer Camps

Over the summer holiday GMH organises summer camps for children from disadvantaged backgrounds to escape challenging home situations. Volunteers in July can help accompanying children on these camps.

The Street Children Project

Volunteers with specific skills or qualifications might be able to work on our new Street Child Project, particularly if they have previous experience of volunteering with vulnerable children. Activities include:

  • Helping our teacher in homework support sessions at the centre
  • Providing extra classes for children in French or English
  • Helping with or running sports activities
