Update on the Street Children Research Project

The first phase of a Research Project on street children is currently in progress in Taroudannt. The project is aimed at identifying the key issues in street children’s lives, helping to ensure that the support MCT develops for street children is appropriate and targeted. MCT is planning to release a research report on the subject, due in summer 2010.

MCT’s work is expanding, as we develop new projects to support children in poverty in Taroudannt and South Morocco. A number of exciting opportunities have arisen to improve the range and quality of support that street children receive, helping them to reintegrate school, access health services and get additional structure in their daily living.

Meetings are currently being held with local organisations to explore the possibilities for joint working and developing formal partnership agreements. We will bring you more news of these new collaborations and the difference they are making to street children in the coming months.

MCT Welcomes New Trustee

The Moroccan Children’s Trust are delighted to welcome Nick Denison to their board of Trustees.

He is looking forward to contributing to the development of the charity, and will meet quarterly with fellow trustees Dr Chris Hands, Sam Taylor, Jess Thomas and Alexandra Apostolou. As the son of David Denison, the founder of AfricaTrust Networks and our volunteer scheme in Morocco, it is fantastic that the family’s connection to the charity continues with its younger generation. Nick Denison works in e-sales for Deutsche Bank. His experience and insights in business, marketing, project management and strategy will be much valued by the Moroccan Children’s Trust and we are glad to be working with him.

New MCT Volunteers in UK and Morocco

We would like to formally welcome Alex Birbeck and Abdeslam Tadaoui to the MCT team in the UK. Alex has been helping in publicity and logistics for the Souk and will be supporting MCT’s volunteers working in Taroudannt. Abdeslam will be joining to assist with fundraising efforts in the UK.

In addition, MCT would like to congratulate Faye Rolfe, who will start her volunteer placement in Taroudannt during summer 2010. We look forward to hearing about her adventures and experiences in Morocco.

MCT’s Souk is a Success!

To celebrate the launch of the Street Children Project, MCT held ‘The Souk’ at Al Manaar Cultural Heritage Centre on March 13, 2010.

Complete with stalls from local businesses, henna, a drumming workshop, raffle prizes and delicious cuisine, the event illustrated the rich culture of Morocco and the Moroccan community in the UK. With the participation of 24 businesses, community organisations and professionals, donations of over £2000, and attendance from more than 200 people, the event remains a giant success for MCT. We have continued to get positive feedback and messages of thanks from business partners and people who came on the day. We hope to keep up the momentum and excitement for MCT as we build upon the launch of the Street Children Project!

MCT Receives Generous £1000 Donation from Llangattock Bridge Club

During ‘The Souk’, at Al-Manaar Mosque in London on March 13, Mrs. Suzanne Wintle from Llangattock Bridge Club made a generous donation of £1000 to Dr Chris Hands, Director of MCT. The money had been raised by Llangattock and Crickhowell bridge players and will be used by MCT for their work in Tarroudannt. We would like to thank Mrs. Wintle and the bridge players from Llangattock and Crickhowell for their wonderful gesture of generosity and faith in the work by MCT.
