MCT Gala Dinner a resounding success!

On February 4th, MCT held its first major fundraising event, a Gala Dinner to celebrate the organisation’s 2nd anniversary as a registered charity.

The evening featured a variety of music, including performances from Gli Amici della Musica Quintet and Mr Serboute and his orchestra. Our guests also enjoyed a wonderful Moroccan meal prepared by Oasis caterers and bid generously in our auction, taking home items such as a weekend for two in Marrakech, traditional Moroccan furniture and rugs produced by a women’s cooperative linked to our organisation.

Thanks to the generosity of our guests, the event raised more than £7,000- enough money to run the project for 3 months! Our thanks go to everyone who contributed to the success of the evening, particularly Dr Abdallah Alaoui (BMCE Bank) and Souad Talsi MBE (Al-Hasaniya) for their advice and support and Sarah Sibley (Street Children Project Intern) who organised the dinner.

Bucket shake raises £600 for Street Children Project

On Thursday January 6th and Tuesday January 11th, members of the MCT team were at Stockwell and Earls Court tube stations collecting for the Street Children Project. In spite of the rainy conditions and people feeling the ‘January pinch’, we were able to raise almost £600 (8000 dhs) – that’s nearly equivalent to 2 months rent on our Street Child Centre and our teacher’s salary for 2 months.

A big thank you to all the kind commuters who donated and also to Jess and Molly who came along to support our bucket shaking efforts!

Black tie dinner to mark MCT’s 2nd birthday!

MCT will be celebrating its 2nd birthday on February 4th. To mark the occasion, we will be holding a black tie dinner and auction at a Central London venue (tbc). The evening will be Moroccan-themed, with traditional Moroccan cuisine and music and we hope that Princess Lalla Joumala, Moroccan ambassador to the UK, will be in attendance.

If you are interested in attending or would like further details, please contact our event organiser sarah.sibley@moroccanchildrenstrust.org

Work now underway at Street Children Centre

Work at MCT’s Centre for Street Children in Taroudannt, Morocco, has now been underway for more than a month.

Our three full-time social workers, who are based at the Centre, are already undertaking a wide range of tasks including visiting families in their own homes, welcoming families to the centre, accompanying children on healthcare visits and running sports activities. The Centre has so far elicited an extremely positive response from the community it was set-up to help, with 41 families enrolled in our project. To celebrate the opening of the Street Children Centre, many of those families took part in a large dinner, generously sponsored by a friend of the organisation. The children of the project have also received gifts of school exercise books, pens and pencils, whilst plenty of winter clothing is on its way, thanks to another local organisation.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to all who have contributed to getting the Centre up and running.

Street Children Project report successfully launched

MCT’s Street Children report “A Different Path: Street and working children in Morocco” was launched last month, in the highly prestigious venue of the House of Lords. The event was well attended and the findings presented in the report lead to lots of lively discussion. Many thanks, in particular, to esteemed friend of the charity Lord Ahmed who got the evening underway with a description of his own experiences of child poverty.
